Looking at some of the great DVDs coming out today. Well, all the ones that I think are great. You might find others that you enjoy while you’re out. But this is my list. Onwards!
As always I strongly suggest you buy any DVD you like this and every week over at Scarecrow Video. Seattle’s premier independent movie store has everything you could ever want and right next to it is a film you never heard of and now desperately need to buy.
NCIS The Complete Eighth Season
This is where we started with NCIS. Well, actually Elise started with a USA marathon and then I got hooked on the new episodes. I’m not a crime drama viewer by any means. However, NCIS is interesting, funny, and fast. Every moment there’s something happening. Laughs, intrigue, oohs and ahhs and ha-has. Its the heir to pulp adventures. Easily digested, quick, but worth the time and money every time.
NCIS LA is more hit and miss. Season two is out today as well.
Phineas & Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension
Mom! Phineas and Ferb are making a movie! Yes, its a cartoon and many modern cartoons are abysmal. Yes, there are many young annoying fans of the show and that may have turned you off to it. But the show is funny as hell. Its witty, its ridiculous, and it really and truly is enjoyable for the whole family. The Christmas special has already entered my must view every year list after only one viewing. If this movie is even half as good as that its an instant classic.
Trollhunter
Holy shit Trollhunter comes out today! Mentioned for some time now in hushed tones over the internet, the film will finally be unleashed on a US audience. Its foreign, indy, sci fi and low budget. Which so many times leads to disaster. This only leads you to have two thoughts: Wow what a great movie! I need to make one too! Watch some too good for the budget monsters at home tonight.
Tom & Jerry & the Wizard of Oz
I just want to point out that this film stars “Tom and Dorthy”. Jerry needs a new agent! He gets to dance with Gene Kelly and then his career stalled.
The Event: The Complete Series
There’s a phrase in comics now called writing for trade. It means that sometimes issues are obviously written to stretch out a story for 6 issues (or however long the graphic novel will be) that could be told in a much shorter time span. Thus is the Event. A fine idea but holy fuck do you get bored waiting for things. Not to say that nothing happens. It does. There’s usually one new piece added to the puzzle every show. But it doesn’t feel like it matters. I guarantee when you watch this set you’ll tell instantly what episodes aired during sweeps weeks.
Roger Corman’s Cult Classics Sword and Sorcery Collection (Deathstalker, Deathstalker II, The Warrior and the Sorceress, & Barbarian Queen)
Its like an orgy of B movie trademarks. Swords, boobs, blood, sweat, half naked adventurers, cheesy effects. This is a do it yourself MST3K kit. Just add snark. There’s also a Women in Cages three movie Corman set out today as well. Man, this guy is everywhere. I might need to delve into his works at some point. Re-watch Sharktopus.
The Angry Beavers Seasons One and Two
Not to be confused with hate monger Gibson’s Beaver title also out today. No no this is a lesser known but equally as great NickToon finally out on DVD. The show has been available for streaming for a while now, but you can finally take it home with you. Well, to keep, as a physical object I mean.
The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
I like Super Size Me and most episodes of 30 Days so I’m willing to give Morgan Spurlock’s latest movie a chance. Remember, every dollar spent on this DVD brings his upcoming Comic Con documentary that much closer to our screens.
TNA releases Sacrifice and Slammiversary PPVs from earlier this year. Out of all 6 hours there’s maybe an hour’s worth that’s really deserving of your time.
Peeping Blog
The story is that a pervert writes a blog on how to spy on women. He is hiding in a girl’s home when a worst evil strikes. Does he expose himself (well, in the other way) to save the day or stay hidden? Horror and hijinxs ahead.
New Adventures of Captain Amazing-Lad
Some very strange animated super hero thing. Its a parody of all things super hero but that doesn’t necessarily make it good. Probably worth checking out though.
Calamari Wrestler
Kaiju wrestling action?! You’re damn right I’ll be there!
OMG! The Top 50 Incidents in WWE History
The pick of the week and the one that will be sitting on my DVD shelf sometime today. I’ve only seen a couple previews through WWE’s YouTube page and that has been more than enough. This set looks like hours and hours of love for some of the craziest amazing most batshit moments over decades of wrestling. I am beyond cant wait for this. I am sit outside and wait for it to show up then run to the TV and not move until I watch every minute of it.
