The second installment of what the Hellions are watching this week. To remind you all, I’m subscribed to Netflix and Hulu where is how I locate most of the interesting things I watch. If you have any suggestions, or would like to be a part of the Hellions writing crew like me on Facebook, follow me on Twitter and take care…To read the entire article.
After the joy of last week’s Black Books we ran straight through all two seasons of Spaced. While I love Shaun of the Dead I was late to the dance for Hot Fuzz and the place was closed down by the time I got to Spaced. Even though its a few years old nothing feels dated at all. Quick plot rundown. Tim (Simon Pegg, Scotty on the new Star Trek) gets dumped and looks for an apartment. Daisy (Jessica Hynes, recognizable to most of you from three episodes of Doctor Who and various British shows) moves out of the squatter set up she was stuck in and both start searching for an apartment. They become friends during their search and decide to lie and pretend to be a couple in order to find a place to live. They rent an apartment from Marsha, become friends with Brian (who also lives in the building), and bring their best friends – Tim’s Mike and Daisy’s Twist – into the group and hijinxs ensue.
Daisy is a stuggling writer and Tim is a struggling comic book artist. Due to these areas of expertise, the references and jokes abound. One of the most literal laugh out loud funny moments is when Tim talks about burning his belongings in effigy over a bad break up. Scene change and we see these are his Star Wars items. Tim is let down by the dropped turd that is the Phantom Menace. Hilarious! The Phantom Menace joke doesn’t go away either, showcasing how us geeks can cling a little too hard to our obsessions.
As great as the many movie and TV references are at the beginning they soon become the dessert to a wonderful meal. We all laugh at winks and nods to A-Team, Murder She Wrote, Matrix and so so much more. But then the characters grab hold of your heart and their story becomes the true enjoyment. The not love story between Tim and Daisey, the actual love story of Brian and Twist, and the what the fuck is going on with these characters reaction to Marsha and Mike.
Yes, the entire show is available to watch online, and yet I’m still getting ready to spend money. The DVD features commentary by the cast along with special guests like Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt and other generals in the geek army. Plus, and I wont spoil it, there’s a special documentary that lets you know the unfilmed futures of your favorite cast members. This glorious present ends up with a pretty little bow to wrap up every bit of happiness its given us.
Its only 14 episodes and that does suck, but those are 14 episodes I’ll be watching again and again. Its already added to my all time favorites list.
This title wasn’t on my radar, nor on the list of upcoming titles and I didn’t know it was out there in the ether until the day it arrived on watch instantly. Greg Behrendt: Is That Guy from That Thing is hysterical. I’ve been a fan of Greg since seeing an old stand up special in which he coined the phrase “ripped like Jesus”. The success he’s had with the “He’s Just Not That Into You” empire gives me great joy for him as a loyal fan. I may be the only non housewife who watched his short lived talk show. If you liked all of these, then this special is still probably not for you. Somehow he makes horrible sex and scat jokes (well, more like stories) that aren’t offensive. Don’t get me wrong, these are filthy stories. But they’re told in such a way that you’re drawn to the man. You think, I wish my (insert woman’s name and their relationship to you) could find a nice guy like that. In an age where people throw around LOL to meaningless levels, you will actually laugh out loud at this hour long comedy special.
There are three sci-fi movie discs at home that I’ll hopefully get through by next week. Plus I need to track down The Tribe after reading CapedCrafter’s review. See you next week!
