The State of the Championship Address.

It’s no mystery that I LOVE professional wrestling, much to the chagrin of my lovely wife. I’ve grown up with it, I’ve watched the WWE grow as a company, and I’ve always had an infatuation with the championship belts offered in various wrestling organizations. If there is one thing that I will admit, I took a few years off from watching wrestling. Mainly because it was something I shared with my father.  After he passed away, I just lost my affinity for it. Which now brings us to April of this year; I started checking out Raw again and shortly after TNA or Impact Wrestling or whatever the hell you call it these days.

I’ve always had a fascination with wrestling gold and like the loser that I am, a couple of years back, I bought two of the replica WWE championship belts. You know, the 90’s WWE championship belt and the intercontinental championship title; the one’s they had before the attitude era belts took over. Also, like more of the geek that I am, you can often see me in profile pics with the gold around my shoulder (see my Twitter profile pic for reference).

The year is 2011, and one of my favorite things in wrestling is now almost insignificant. Have you seen the belts of today? Let’s be honest, the “Spinner Belt” was a great gimmick for the John Cena rapper days, but now, largely seems hoaky and irrelevant. With no faith to be found in the belt anymore, it was made even worse recently when two WWE champions were crowned. In the wake of this epicly hyped match at Summer Slam, between John Cena and Chick Magnet Punk, I thought there was hope that perhaps we would see a new championship belt, a more respectable one; one that didn’t scream flamboyance or just look like some cheap chains a shitty rapper would wear. I still hold out hope that this will be rectified soon…please WWE, please restore respect of the belt!

With that said, do you folks remember WWE PPV’s where practically all of the titles were defended? I miss those days, I mean do the 30 day rules apply anymore because some of the titles seem to just skate by, such as the Tag Team titles, and even the U.S. title. Since Ziggler won the title, has he really even defended it? A prominent “stepping stone” type title such as this should not be falling through the cracks.

This brings me to that other wrestling organization. You know the one, It’s the one with the identity crisis. When I returned home to the world of wrestling, the first night I tuned in to watch that “other” company, I saw that Sting was their World Heavyweight Champion (OK, nothing wrong with that), and then I saw the belt that he, well, I don’t know exactly how to describe the way he was handling it. But the way he was holding the belt was exactly how I felt about their championship. It looks like crap, and Sting alone cannot save the reputation of this belt at this stage in the game. The first thing I thought when I saw this belt was, “wow, Zack Ryder’s Internet Championship Belt looks better than this!” Hell even the Knockouts Tag Titles look better than their (I’m sorry I refuse to say their name, because I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS!) Heavyweight Championship.

On another note, since becoming TV champ, EY has done nothing but funny, but ultimately damaging promos (let’s face it, the multiple personality disorder wrestling company doesn’t realize what kind of gem they have in him) related to the championship. Can we just see EY, with out the overly dumb act (pay attention _______________ company) and just let him WRESTLE (you know… it relates to your company’s tag line “Wrestling Matters”.).

But, I digress, mediocrity has become a standard in wrestling these days. It upsets me, but there are gems, and If you’re willing to look for them they are well worth it. Before I go, I feel that a few suggestions are in order before I close this out. One: please make a couple of changes to the WWE championship, and by a couple I mean scrap the damn belt.  Two: other company (the one with the lazy NWO thing going on), we know that wrestling matters to you, but could you make the story matter too (you can start by getting rid of your writing staff)? And three: this may seem odd but could you bring back 5 Questions with the champ…that was heavily entertaining. Thank you for allowing me to gouge your eyes out with my incessant quackery.

(P.S. I didn’t mention the Divas championship, because I don’t enjoy talking about things that don’t matter to me and don’t matter to most people in the wrestling community.)
