Just removed from the Extreme Rules PPV, the Internet Wrestling Community is pissed off about this edition of Smackdown. Do they have reason to be? Do I agree? Lets start the show and find out.
Knowing, unfortunately, what’s coming later in this episode, the tribute to Christian and his win is that much more heartbreaking. Great video package, as always from WWE. But it is surprising that Christian gets one. Also surprised is TNA, the writers and wrestlers of said company also, after hearing Christian say he’s never touched a world title. Ouch.
Christian comes out to celebrate with his Peeps. Is it possible that WWE would ever acknowledge TNA as a world title? I realize that Christian’s current story is bigger for WWE than whether or not to validate TNA. But it is interesting. This is an ongoing debate amongst wrestling fans though. Which titles count as true world titles.
Christian thanks everyone who helped and supported him along the way, especially Edge. As this is a wrestling show, he is of course interrupted. Mark Henry, smiling over his new heel turn, comes down to the ring. Christian reminds Mark that a world title is not gold foil wrapped around delicious chocolate. Great Khali comes out next to sign up for his world title shot. Captain Charisma asks for another freak to come out demanding a title shot. Unfortunately its Randy Orton who comes down the ramp. It looks like we have a problem here. Number one contenders match? Battle Royal? No! Teddy Long comes out and lets the fans vote on who they want to see. Gee, I’m guessing they’ll pick the only face in the ring. Is this a house show? How often does WWE do a random fan vote? Speaking of, are they doing Cyber Sunday this year? Teddy Long makes the match for later tonight.
Khali and Runjin run into their new friend backstage. I cant remember hsi name right now. He’s pretty big though and isn’t a bad talker. Hopefully we see what he does in the ring soon.
Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan.
The last two US champions lock it up on their new home at Smackdown. Sheamus has thrown his US inspired gear to the back of the closet. The first big move comes when Sheamus runs Bryan into the ring post. That is becoming a favorite move lately. This is at least the third review I’ve written mentioning that spot. Sheamus smacks Daniel all across the ring. The Celtic Warrior is on his way to being called the best brawler in WWE. Nothing but impressive work as he beats down his opponents. Booker T doesn’t know if Bryan has some martial arts in his background, but is impressed by Daniel’s kicks. At least one of the three announcers should have had a fact or two there. Daniel catches Sheamus coming down for a shoulder tackle attempt and grabs Sheamus’s arm into a Lobell lock. Bryan tries to dive through the ropes but the fiery hand of Ireland wears a watch that keeps perfect time. Sheamus hits a brogue kick to the head at the moment Daniel comes through the ropes. One more kick inside the ring to keep Bryan down and Sheamus gets the pin. Real good match.
I’m watching this on WWE’s YouTube channel and the video pieces they play for their Superstars instead of commercials are really well done.
The villain of the year, Cody Rhodes, comes out for a promo. His assistants bring along the paper bags. Which should be available on Shop WWE by now.
Big Show (1/2 Tag Team Champions) vs. Ezekiel Jackson (with The Corre)
Big Zeke comes out wiht his Corre shirt hanging from his tights. I hate when people do that. What happened in your day that was so exhausting you must dangle your shirt instead of wearing it? Kane comes out to have his tag team partner’s back. Show and Jackson actually do some ground wrestling, which is shocking. Not as shocking as Zeke escaping a head lock by taking over Big Show with a back body drop. Ezekiel slams Show with ease and gets a two count only a couple minutes into the match. The Corre tries to distract Show but Kane holds them off for a time. Big Show comes out to even the odds and its the wrong decision. Show climbs back in the ring but is caught by the juggernaut known as Ezekiel Jackson. Zeke finishes it up with a huge clothesline and gets the pin on Big Show. Zeke doesn’t want to celebrate with the Corre, and he walks away from the group.
Layla vs. Alicia Fox
I don’t think I’ve seen two black women wrestle each other since Jazz and Jacqueline were both in WWE. So, ten years ago? Layla is always in control of this very quick match and the pin comes without any offense from Fox. Layla celebrates until the laughter starts. Kharma is here bitches. I have definitely never seen three African American women in the ring at the same time. Layla breaks her fear trance and escapes. Alicia finds a pair of balls somewhere around ringside and actually kicks Kharma! Wrong move from the former wedding planner. Fox takes an Implant Buster and stays down.
The rest of the Corre confronts Ezekiel about his lack of teamwork. Wade says, “look at me, because I want you to see this one coming.” And the Corre swarms Jackson, decimating WWE’s new big man. It takes a laundry cart the size of a dumpster to keep Jackson down. Wow, even in a beat down they build up Ezekiel.
Sin Cara vs. Tyson Kidd
Kids are already wearing Sin Cara masks. Chavo Guerrero joins for commentary because despite all their time in WWE none of the three announcers can properly call a Lucha match. Its Canada vs Mexico and I’m crossing my fingers for a USA chant. Was there a lighting problem or does Sin Cara have his own match lighting now? If so, what is the point? Is it covering something or is it meant to accentuate the match? Tyson is mostly taking bumps in this match, but thankfully he can make his opponents look good. Sin Cara hits the Spanish Fly flip from the top turnbuckle. Hell of a finisher, but not one that can be performed on bigger men. Sin Cara continues his push and gets the pin. Chavo begins a feud with Sin Cara and that could lead to an amazing match.
Christian (World Champion) vs. Randy Orton
Too much is happening for me to call this move for move. Orton, who some would say has a habit of not putting people over, is treating Christian like an equal. Randy gives Christian a lot of offense and numerous pin attempts. The only problem I see in any of Christian’s work is that he might have too many signature moves. Its like Bret Hart’s series of moves to weaken his opponent. Orton catches Christian coming back into the ring and hits him with the rope assisted hesitation DDT. The head peep still kicks out and the Viper is stunned. Christian is equally stunned after dropping Orton on his head and only getting a two count. The crowd is engrossed in the match. Captain Charisma counters the RKO, Orton leap frogs out of a Killswitch. Christian springs off the ropes but gets caught with an RKO. Randy pins Christian and sadly the beautiful moment from Sunday is already over.
Christian sits in the ring, looking like a man who just saw his life shattered. And he did. Fingers crossed that this leads to a heel turn and a much longer reign as world champion.
