This week jolly old England gets to say goodbye to Edge. Lets know our enemy and get started.
“Sir” Michael Cole gets a special introduction. I use the time to think, sure we’re only a minute into the show but why not use this opportunity for a bathroom break.
Cody Rhodes continues to evolve as a super villain with a great heel promo to start off the show. His hoodie would not look out of place in the next Daredevil movie. Nor would Cody be out of place as Matt Murdock, come to think of it. Cody pulls out a paper bag, because he’s going to fuck some nasty ring rat tonight. Oh, my bad. The bags are handed out to the fans so they can hide their shame, much like Cody has to hide his own.
Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio
The match starts with Rey out wrestling Cody but the commercial break comes up fast. Back from the break and Cody is in control. Cody attempts a power bomb but Rey keeps going up and his center of balance tips Cody back for Mysterio to get a pin attempt. These two are starting to know each other very well in the ring and their matches are becoming fluid. Cody kicks Rey into the ring post and starts to control the match once again.
The size of Rhodes’s protective mask exaggerates his features. This makes his devilish grin while punishing Mysterio that much more menacing. Cody’s “injury” is the best thing that has happened to his career. Cody gets too excited to catch Rey in the Cross Rhodes and forgets to implement the move. Rey spins around and gets a victory roll up on Rhodes for the pin. Cody snaps, well continues to snap, after the match and destroys Rey Mysterio. The post fight brawl is just as good as their match and really should only lead into a Falls Count Anywhere match at the next PPV. Cody hits Cross Rhodes on the arena floor and then sticks a bag over Rey’s head. (So he’s not embarrassed when they have sex?)
The Corre talks and in case you forgot, there’s tension in the group. This group wont last past the Draft.
LayCool continues to explode. I continue to not care one bit.
Jack Swagger vs. Trent Barreta
Both men are fine wrestlers. Unfortunately Swagger is involved with the ever annoying Michael Cole and his current story. Which means Cole wont shut the fuck up in this match. Swagger locks on the ankle lock and poor Trent discovers he was booked in a squash match.
Big Show and Kane vs. The Corre (Heath Slather and Justin Gabriel, WWE Tag Team Champions)
With the Corre about to go their separate ways chances are the titles will be lost tonight. Ezekiel Jackson watches the match from ringside but Wade is not out at this time. Heath and Justin get in a fair amount of offense against these two giants. Jackson pushes Kane off the top rope and the Corre starts to wear Kane down. Kane picks up Gabriel for a slam but Justin spins with it and takes Kane down with a DDT. The Corre hits a lot of hot tags but not hot enough when Kane finally tags in the Big Show. Show takes out Gabriel, Kane takes out Zeke and the Big Show choke slams Heath into a pinfall. New WWE Tag Team Champions are crowned. These two men held the tag titles over 5 years ago. This is their second reign and sadly in WWE logic that might make them one of the greatest tag teams of all time. Big Show is joining the ranks of Bobby Eaton and Arn Anderson in the tag title champions with multiple partners list.
Drew McIntyre vs. Chris Masters
Michael Cole gets on Booker T’s case for supporting Drew. Isn’t Drew a heel? Thus why would Cole get on Drew’s case? I see a face turn coming. The WWE Draft is mentioned and the potential for either of these men to be moved to Raw. That might be the best thing to happen to either man. Both of which are stuck in midcard status on Smackdown. Drew should have reached the next level after the build up he had last year. Masters needs to either get a push going or pack it in. Masters builds up and it looks like he might actually win a high profile match. Chris tries for the Masterlock but Drew pushes backwards off the ropes and escapes while Masters lands on his head. Drew hits the Future Shock DDT and picks up the pin. Hopefully he continues to get wins and reaches his potential.
Wade Barrett (of the Corre, Intercontinental champion, with Ezekiel Jackson) vs. Kofi Kingston
Wade doesn’t come out to support the rest of the Corre and after losing the tag team titles Heath and Justin are no where to be seen in Wade’s match. Some of the WWE Universe in the front row are still wearing the bags that Cody Rhodes brought to ringside. That, or as they are in England, this might be Wade’s family and they are embarrassed to see him in this match. Jackson tries to hit Kofi and accidently knocks Wade down, almost costing him the match. Wade yells at Zeke like a bitch and orders Ezekiel to leave the ring side. All of this fighting allows Kofi to take advantage and the crowd gets excited that there might be another title change tonight. Kofi tries to roll up Wade in the corner but Barrett stuffs it and hangs on to the ropes for the sneaky pinfall.
Give these two men some time on PPV. Something is clicking between them and its very possible they could steal the show if given enough space to do so.
Alberto Del Rio brings out his usual entourage and begins his tribute to Edge. Is there really some soft Mexican music being played in the background during every moment Alberto speaks? I cant yet decide if that’s annoying or brilliant. Del Rio gifts Edge with a grandfather clock, Depends and… LITA?! The crowd goes absolutely ape shit for one of the greatest Divas in WWE history. But it would be Brodus Clay’s twin sister playing the role. I’m a little shocked no one in WWE painted a fake tattoo on Mo-Lita’s shoulder. Del Rio’s next gift to Edge is a walker. Tennis balls not included. His final gift is a scooter, driven by Rodriguez, who does a hilarious impression of Edge’s ring entrance. Whenever he splits off from Alberto that kid might be money.
That’s all the man can take and Edge enters the arena. Damn shame that one of Edge’s greatest t-shirts is released after his retirement. “Done it all. Won it all.” Damn straight he did. Edge insults the heels until ADR sics his attack dog Clay on Edge. But here is Christian coming out of no where to attack Team Del Rio with a ladder. Christian takes out the Mexican contingency and then sets up the ladder in the middle of the ring. Edge looks on as his brother by choice grabs the World heavyweight title and the WWE Universe holds its breathe hoping this is a glimpse of the future.
