Smarked for Death – WWE Friday Night Smackdown 4/8/11.

Do you know your enemy?  Well, Green Day, I’m not sure.  There are heel and face changes all the time in wrestling.  Lets watch this week’s episode and we can discover if my current good vs evil stat card is up to date.

Booker T and Josh Matthews are our hosts on 6 degrees of Tough Enough.  Oh, Michael Cole is also around still.  Alberto Del Rio comes out with Ricardo Rodriguez and Brodus Clay.  Alberto tells the crowd who he is, which I thought was Ricardo’s job.  ADR says Edge seized opportunity at WrestleMania.  He seized retaining his own title?  I don’t think it works that way Al.  Can I call you Al?  Edge and Christian interrupt and bring out a tow truck hauling ADR’s now damaged vehicle.  Edge and Christian, for all of your wrestling destruction needs, call Rent-A-EC.  Edge pulls out some spray paint that looks like mustard, and that’s some spicy graffiti he sprays on the car hood.  Del Rio wants a rematch but the owner of Instant Classic Customs believes himself to be deserving as well.  The Planters Playa comes out and makes a number one contender match for tonight.  I’m not sure if Christian is dressing like he works in a garage or if its a shout out to Colt Cabana.

Yay, a WrestleMania rematch of a match in which the entrances took longer.  Hopefully this one is more competitive and interesting.  Big Show has an impressive WrestleMania resume?  I don’t believe so.  Double checking… Yeah.  Show is 3-8 at ‘Mania.  And all 3 wins come from tag team matches.  Big Show has been in more tag, 3 way, and gimmick matches at Manias than anyone else.  That can be his legacy.  Weird matches.

Big Show, Kane, Santino Marella, and Kofi Kingston vs. The Corre

Match starts out with Justin Gabriel and Santino.  Cole asks who is leading the face team, is it Santino?  Um, Cole, isn’t the gimmick behind the Corre that they have no leader?  That they are all equal.  Check yo self Cole.  Back to the match, which has already lasted longer than Mania.  Show steps onto Slater and I think I can actually hear Heath’s sternum crack.  Kofi and Show team up for a high high cross body.  They get named “thunder and lightning”.  I’ll assume Kofi is lightning.  Also, if you’ve ever been in a public restroom at the same time as Show you’ll hear some thunder.  Damn. Its like Thor is calling down the heavens.

Back from commercial and Kane and Wade are exchanging.  But its just to hold the place for Ezekiel Jackson to get the big tag.  Kane and Zeke trade moves all too briefly.  Is Jackson being held back or protected?  Kofi comes in and hits a few high spots with Gabriel.  Little known fact, but Kofi regularly has black light matches on house shows.  Thus explaining his ring gear.  Kofi pins Justin and the good guys pick up the first fall.

Oh that’s right.  This is a two out of three falls match.  Excellent, its actually been a fun match so far.

Second fall comes ridiculously fast when Wade Barrett beats the hell out of Santino and picks up the pin.  Score is now 1 and 1.

The match comes down to a lot of big impactful moves.  I don’t want to say high spots, but there’s no chain wrestling anymore.  Its all about getting the final pin.  Everyone starts to fight and things get out of control resulting in the referee calling for the bell.  Well that’s horseshit.  There are 8 guys in this match.  Give the rules a little flexibility.  Kane and Show grab Big Zeke for a chokeslam, but he’s just too much man.  Santino assists for a three person cobra choke slam.  The faces get the win due to a DQ and its a 2 to 1 victory.

Cody Rhodes vs. Trent Barreta

Trent saves his gum for after the match by hiding it in his wrist tape.  Trent will also be stressing out because he has this big paper coming up, cheerleading practice all day and no date for the big dance!  Cody tries to hide his face from the camera, but he cant hide his talent!  Yeah, that’s how I’m leading in to telling you that Cody gets the pin.  Rhodes beats up Barreta for a little bit after the match but Rey Mysterio makes the save.  So this feud will also continue.  Booker says, “now we got a fight!”  Oh, poor Trent Barreta.

Rock and John Cena setting up their match is being called the most important moment in Raw’s 18 year history?  Wow.  I greatly disagree.

Edge and Christian talk about the possibility they might face each other for the title.  Turn one of them heel already!  I don’t mind the slow build actually.  Its only the fear that none of this will matter and WWE still wont give Christian a run with the World title.

Michael Cole says he’s now 1-0 at WrestleMania and next year should be a streak vs streak match.  I think I would pay a lot of money to see Cole put in critical condition on live TV.

LayCool vs. Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix.

Josh asks Cole why he’s not wearing a singlet tonight.  Cole says he’s not “entertaining tonight”.  This ban on using the word “wrestling” has reached ridiculous levels.  Michelle and Layla fight each other during the match.  Oh no!  Does this mean the end of the most successful womens tag team since the Jumping Bomb Angels?  (Where is that sarcasm button?)  Michelle gets hurt/refuses the tag and Layla gets pinned by Kelly.  McCool claims her back went out.  Which is ironic because usually people are carrying her.

Michael Cole continues to talk, annoy, and create disgust in the wrestling fans.  Sorry, the entertainment fans.  Cole brings out Jack Swagger for no reason.  They both dub Cole, Mr WrestleMania.  Who does Cole have nude pictures of?  Thankfully Sin Cara comes out.  Sin Cara leaps over the top rope, which is still impressive even when I now know there’s a trampoline involved.  Swagger is taken out and Sin Cara continues to make his impact.

Layla asks Michelle to go to couples therapy.  McCool reminds Layla that they’re not a couple.  They’re not entertaining either and yet here they are in wwEEEEEEE!

Alberto Del Rio (with Ricardo Rodriguez and Brodus Clay) vs. Christian (with his peeps) for the #1 Contender spot.

Cole tells us that Edge and Christian “invented the ladder match!”  I thought Shawn Michaels invented it.  If you’re going to call the guy the greatest of all time why not give him credit for everything possible.  Granted, I wouldn’t mention Razor Ramon anytime soon but other than that bring up HBK.

Edge joins for commentary during this match.  Even if you didn’t read spoilers, its evident from the start that Del Rio will end up winning this match.  The focus is on Edge, Del Rio, Christian — in that order.  Has their ever been a 3 way ladder match?  Singles, not the tag TLC ones.  Its a shame that Edge is getting so much attention in this match, because Christian and Del Rio are busting their asses in the match.  There is some great wrestling going on in this entertainment show.  These two constantly fool the crowd with near falls.  Christian counters the arm breaker!  Wow.  Del Rio slingshots Christian into the post, shoulder first.  This should set up the arm breaker, but Christian gets the rope break.  Brilliant stuff.  Brodus tries to interfere but Edge spears him.  Christian is dumped off the top rope and Del Rio picks up the pin.  Possibly the best TV match of the week.
