Smarked for Death – WWE Monday Night Raw 6/7/10.

Do you care about the rest of the show?  I don’t think so.  In a week where Dusty Rhodes and Mean Gene riding to the ring in a golf cart is over shadowed, something big happened.  Nothing happened in the rest of the show that will impact anything else.  But speaking of impact.

Wade Barrett shows up for an interview.  He says wait until next week.  Every single viewed assumes he’ll challenge someone for a title next week.  So that’s it for season one of NXT.  Daniel Bryan will probably end up on Smackdown, the wrestling show.  David Otunga will end up on Raw, because he’s too Hollywood connected to waste.  Maybe we’ll see the other 5 at some point, but probably not.  And that is all any of us thought going into last night’s episode of Raw.

But then our world was changed.

Wade Barrett comes out during the very entertaining John Cena vs. CM Punk match.  (Punk is the best in WWE right now.  Yes, I’ve always been a mark for Punk.  Turns out its because I was right all along.)  All of us viewers assume it means that Wade will challenge Cena next week.  Or, if Orton is injured, maybe take his spot at Fatal 4 Way.  Nothing to write home about.  Just the usual plot line to wrestling.  But if you were paying attention, the fans in the crowd started pointing at something.  Something that wasn’t Wade or the action in the ring.

Mother fucking Michael Tarver shows up looking scary as shit.  If you were watching NFL or MLB and saw this in the crowd your first thought would be, “a lot of people are going to die tonight”.  Then the beat down begins.

Eight no bodies.  Eight men who over the past 3-4 months we the fans have been trained to view as jokes.  Useless challenges every week.  Mis matched matches.  Terrible promos.  Goofy names and gimmicks.  Besides Wade being big and a good talker, and Bryan’s indy cred, what did anyone have?  Why should we care?

We should care because tonight was something no one has seen since the original nWo. However, it was radically different too.  Whereas the nWo were main eventers (at first) that took over, these are eight “kids”.  They ran out and destroyed two of the biggest names in WWE.  “Hello WWE Universe, now get the fuck out of our way.”

So many little touches in this angle too.  Daniel Bryan choking out Justin Roberts with Roberts’s own t-shirt.  Michael Tarver looking like death coming to fuck you up.  Tarver hitting the knock out punch!  Justin Gabriel hitting the most heel 450 splash of all time.  Daniel Bryan spitting on Cena!  Bryan screaming at Cena, “YOU are not better than ME!”  The camera work was shaky and chaotic.  Jerry Lawler was found under the rubble that was the announce table.  When was the last time you saw the entire ring destroyed?  Ever?  Even simple little touches like the N armbands pushed this into greatness.

Most of all though, CM Punk tried to save John Cena!  Your biggest heel on Smackdown saving the WWE’s biggest face.  Well, trying to save him.  This isn’t a face turn for Punk.  This is an enemy of my enemy is my friend.  If Team NXT is trying to destroy WWE, then Punk as a WWE employee would do anything to save WWE.  Even partner with Cena.

This angle got so real, a fan jumped in to try and “save” Cena.  A fan got so wrapped up in it he risked his own well being to save his hero!  Again, when was the last time anything like that happened?
