What happened to something happening in a comic? Its either event event after event or filler issues so the graphic novel can be padded out. In this issue Spidey uses the same trick multiple times to get away from Captain Universe. Not defeat him. Instead Spider-Man plays a game of hide and seek with one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Granted part of Captain Universe’s charm (read plot device) has always been that the host for the power doesn’t know what’s going on. From the looks of it the mission for this CU is to stop earthquakes. Not sure yet if its all earthquakes or just fault lines beneath Manhattan. Which are there you know. Would be a real nasty mess if one of those went. We’re also not sure if the Juggernaut plays any role in CU’s mission or if the current host has a problem with Juggy. I do have a problem with how fast Juggernaut walked underwater. Does he have super human speed? I know he can get a running start but I never thought it was above average. The most interesting scene in the issue is Juggernaut freeing Spidey because he “owes him one”. In recent years Juggernaut probably has a higher heroic to villainous deeds ratio than his brother Charles. We’ll have to tune in next week to see where this goes.
In an extra story, Spider-Man interviews for a job over the phone while also battling Absorbing Man. Its really a one joke story as Peter Parker uses all the buzz terms and job lingo nonsense to say why he’s perfect for the job. But wait, all these traits match what Spider-Man’s doing … in the same panel! The villain is stopped and Pete doesn’t get the job. All the same for our lovable loser.
Did we really need two formerly unstoppable bad guys defeated within 4 pages (Absorbing Man) or even worse, off panel (Juggernaut)? Tune in next issue and see Spider-Man defeat Red Hulk with a banana peel!
